I Keep Six Honest Serving Men

A Poem by Rudyard Kipling

The poem provides a great analogy for the core elements of project management. The first verse goes:

 

I keep six honest serving men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.
I send them over land and sea,
I send them east and west;
But after they have worked for me,
I give them all a rest.

 

In project management, these "serving men" represent the critical questions that guide any project from initiation through to completion:

  • What - Defines the scope of the project. What are the objectives? What are the deliverables?
  • Why - Justifies the project. Why is it necessary? Why should resources be allocated to it?
  • When - Sets the timeline. When does it need to start and finish? When are the key milestones?
  • How - Determines the methodology. How will the project be executed? How will challenges be addressed?
  • Where - Identifies the location and logistical aspects. Where will the work take place? Where are the stakeholders based?
  • Who - Assigns responsibilities. Who is involved? Who manages, who delivers, and who benefits?
