I Keep Six Honest Serving Men
A Poem by Rudyard Kipling
The poem provides a great analogy for the core elements of project management. The first verse goes:
I keep six honest serving men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.
I send them over land and sea,
I send them east and west;
But after they have worked for me,
I give them all a rest.
In project management, these "serving men" represent the critical questions that guide any project from initiation through to completion:
- What - Defines the scope of the project. What are the objectives? What are the deliverables?
- Why - Justifies the project. Why is it necessary? Why should resources be allocated to it?
- When - Sets the timeline. When does it need to start and finish? When are the key milestones?
- How - Determines the methodology. How will the project be executed? How will challenges be addressed?
- Where - Identifies the location and logistical aspects. Where will the work take place? Where are the stakeholders based?
- Who - Assigns responsibilities. Who is involved? Who manages, who delivers, and who benefits?
At its core, Kipling's poem unexpectedly serves as a masterclass in project management principles. Remarkably, he seems to channel the wisdom of a seasoned Project Management Expert long before the discipline was formally recognized. By methodically interrogating each dimension of these six critical questions, a project manager can lay the groundwork for meticulous planning and flawless execution of any project. This elegantly simple yet deeply insightful approach serves as a powerful testament to the idea that mastering the fundamentals can navigate us through the labyrinth of even the most intricate projects.
By continuously revisiting these questions throughout the lifecycle of a project, a project manager can maintain control over the project's direction and health, adapting to changes and challenges as they arise. It’s a testament to the enduring wisdom in Kipling’s seemingly simple verse, proving its worth far beyond its literary charm. This disciplined inquiry not only guides the project effectively but also fosters a thorough understanding among all participants, paving the way for successful outcomes.
