70% of Projects Fail.....

It's a great attention seeking headline, isn't it? This is a generally stated statistic from any online search as to how many projects fail.

I have two problems with the statement: the first one is that 67% of statistics are made up; secondly is the definition of failing Projects.

I'll pause here and let you take in these quotes...

Benjamin_Franklin
By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.
Benjamin Franklin
(1706–1790)
Helmuth_von_Moltke
No plan survives first contact with the enemy...
Helmuth von Moltke
(1800–1891)
Sir_Winston_Churchill
Plans are of little importance, but planning is essential
Sir Winston Churchill
(1874–1965)
tyson
Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth
Mike Tyson
(1966 - )

Can you relate to those?

What those quotes are saying in essence is that your project plan will change. The circumstance will change, the environment will change, people will change. Your project will change, this doesn't mean it's failed, how you respond to the changes will determine that.

So - how do we define a project that fails? Or rather than ask the question of "how we" define it, let's look at "how you" define it - seeing as you're looking for solutions for Project Management problems.
